For up-to-date information on the Beacon Program visit the Institute for Local Government website here.

The Institute for Local Government’s  Beacon Program provides a growing number of local governments throughout California with a comprehensive framework and ongoing support to implement effective climate action, energy efficiency and sustainability practices. The Beacon Program provides a platform for local governments to share best practices that create more sustainable communities – places where people thrive and prosper, now and over the long term. Participants in the program that pursue sustainability activities and demonstrate measurable reductions in electricity, natural gas and greenhouse gas emissions are eligible to receive award recognition.

Beacon Program Awards

Each year, dozens of local agencies are honored with Beacon awards.

The Beacon Program features three types of awards:

Beacon Vanguard Award: recognizing a city or county’s holistic approach to addressing climate change. Participating agencies are required to complete each of the requirements for the five Spotlight Awards and adopt a Climate Action Plan to receive a Beacon Vanguard Award.

Spotlight Award: recognizing individual accomplishments of cities and counties participating in the Beacon Program from greenhouse gas reductions to energy savings and more.

Leadership and Innovation Awards: recognizing and promoting the outstanding efforts at the project or program level by cities, counties, special districts and Beacon Champions across California in the following areas:

  • Leadership in Climate Resilience and Adaptation
  • Equity and Engagement in Climate Resilience and Adaptation
  • Cross-Agency Collaboration in Climate Resilience and Adaptation
  • Innovation in Energy
  • Innovation in Clean Transportation
