Beacon Program: Local Leadership Toward Solving Climate Change

The Institute for Local Government and the Statewide Energy Efficiency Collaborative sponsor the Beacon Program. The Beacon Program provides a growing number of cities and counties throughout California with a comprehensive framework and ongoing support to implement effective climate action, energy efficiency and sustainability practices. The Beacon Program provides a platform for local governments to share best practices that create more sustainable communities – places where people thrive and prosper, now and over the long term. Participants in the program that pursue sustainability activities and demonstrate measureable reductions in electricity, natural gas and greenhouse gas emissions are eligible to receive award recognition.

The Beacon Program Awards

Beacon Award: recognizing an agency’s holistic approach to addressing climate change. Participating agencies are required to complete each of six elements to win a Beacon Award.

Spotlight Award: recognizing individual accomplishments of cities and counties participating in the Beacon Program as they work to complete the five elements necessary to achieve a Beacon Award.
