About the Beacon Award

The Institute for Local Government and the Statewide Energy Efficiency Collaborative sponsor the Beacon Program. The Beacon Program provides a growing number of cities and counties throughout California with a comprehensive framework and ongoing support to implement effective climate action, energy efficiency and sustainability practices. The Beacon Program provides a platform for local governments to share best practices that create more sustainable communities – places where people thrive and prosper, now and over the long term. Participants in the program that pursue sustainability activities and demonstrate measureable reductions in electricity, natural gas and greenhouse gas emissions are eligible to receive award recognition.

Sustainability Best Practices Framework

First developed in 2008 and now in its 7th revision, the Sustainability Best Practices Framework offers options for local action in ten areas. They are drawn from practical experiences of cities and counties throughout California. The options vary in complexity and are adaptable to fit the unique needs and circumstances of individual communities.
